Leading Cloud service providers like Amazon and Google are built entirely on open source technologies. Indeed, 58 percent of IT executives now use open source for mission-critical applications, according to Forrester Research.

deu
Christian Stimming (SICK AG)","Claudia Neumann (Praxis Dres. Currently there are some Blends dedicated to certain work fields (Science, Medicine, Education, etc.) as well as language specific Blends (BrDesktop for Brazilian adaptations and EzGo is used in Taiwanese schools). The options to create additional Blends are various and so for instance Blends techniques are also used by the Debian Accessibility project. The talk will give some hints about how to start new Blends and using the Blends techniques to enable easy access to packages fitting a specific work field. The Blends techniques are also helpful to solve quality assurance tasks including more simple tasks like caring for screenshots and description translations. The idea behind this is that Free Software enthusiasts (not necessarily software developers) get good chances to help the project advertised to other users without needing a high level of technical knowledge. In this way the Blends tools should be helpful to form a team around the Blend. Forming a team or even a community around a Blend is also an important feature of the Blends effort. While there are other useful means to add some substructure to the Debian package pool like DebTags these are pure technical ways to tackle this problem. The experience of the existing Blends shows that only those Blends are successful which are driven by a strong team. Some tips how to work towards a strong team are given in the end of the talk.

Über den Autor Andreas Tille: Lebenslauf von Andreas Tille Geburtsdatum: 11. This constant increase of size without any visible substructure leads to helpless users who might have problems to pick the relevant pieces for their work on one hand and on the other hand it is hard to assure the quality of packages which might belong to a certain work field. The Debian Pure Blends effort identifies packages which are useful for certain real life tasks, makes them visible inside the flat pool of packages using certain techniques and provides tools to make the QA work of the dedicated Blend team easier. In that way a substructure inside a large distribution can be established which enables users and developers to cope with the constant growth. Quite successful examples of Blends are Debian Edu, Debian Med and Debian Science. The Pure Blends approach can also be seen as "derivative done the right way". What does this mean: Out of all large distributions a lot of smaller distributions have grown. Some of them are successful but most of them end up completely unmaintained and outdated after some time when derivers might have lost interest. Also the derivative is out of the strong QA measures of the mother distribution and needs to invent a completely separate infrastructure. The Blends approach however, reduces the amount of work to people who would like to adapt a Linux distributions to a minimum. They just have to find out what is missing to solve a certain task and adapt the mother distribution (the source) to the purpose they want to fullfill. The basic idea is: Do not make a separate distribution but enable the distribution itself to fit your purpose best.

Über den Autor Andreas Tille: Lebenslauf von Andreas Tille Geburtsdatum: 11. But this has not been Europe's last word: A new Directive on the fight against Cybercrime is to be proposed early 2010, a European Investigation Order extending to cybercrime investigations and other Regulations loom around the corner. Finally, the European Union negotiates a new Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) which is to include provisions relating to criminal law protection of intellectual property. As it is important to put these proposals into focus, I will first provide a broad overview of the Europeanization of substantive criminal law relating to cybercrime, of mutual legal assistance between the member states, and of truly Europeanized cybercrime investigations. Based on this groundwork, I will report about the current state of play relating to the aforementioned new proposals on the European level and their implementation in Germany. What do the proposed rules really mean to a hacker and to a cracker? How will they interact with fundamental rights, which gained a new normative status in the European Union in December 2009? What are the risks to an open-source approach to software and cyberspace? On the other hand, the new proposals and the European framework might also offer new chances for open-source software, for example in terms of its own legal protection. Policing the Internet -- by the police, not by vigilantism -- requires some well-paid, safe job opportunities for computer experts. Furthermore, citizens are more aware than ever of the need for software which focuses on security, reliability and data protection -- such as open-source software usually does. After a final evaluation of the proposed EU legislation I want to invest about 15 minutes for a discussion about the risks, dangers and opportunities of the Europeanization -- and Internationalization -- of criminal law relating to cybercrime.

Über den Autor Dominik Brodowski: Dominik Brodowski is a graduate student of law at the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Germany and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School. The secret is leveraging open source communities, and Sugar Labs' Sebastian Dziallas will show you how. We will cover the various open source tools and processes used to build a thriving community around Sugar, and give recipes for both the technical and social deployment of these practices on your own projects. No specific technical skills beyond basic familiarity with Linux are required; the use of specific software tools such as git and bodhi will be discussed from a process/practice perspective, and self-teaching resources for those wishing to learn the specifics of deployment and usage will be provided at the end. Attendees with a system administration background or prior experience developing code within open source communities will find knowledge of IRC, wikis, version control, etc. to be helpful. It is suggested that attendees spend 30 minutes before the session on a section of Teaching Open Source's Textbook. You will leave the session with a game plan for leveraging the power of community for one of your current projects - within your organization, outside it, or both - a list of self-teaching resources for the various software collaboration tools you'll need to know, and a round of introductions to existing open source community upstreams and the people involved in building them.

Über den Autor Sebastian Dziallas: Sebastian Dziallas is the founder of Fedora's Education SIG and was part of a team working on OLPC's operating system for the G1G1 program in December 2008. He currently coordinates logistics and support for local deployments with OLPC machines and is the engineering manager for Sugar on a Stick, ultimately accountable to the Sugar Labs Board for all technical work on the project, including the recruitment and training of developers and testers.
