One of our missions is to facilitate the re-use of cultural heritage metadata and content by third parties. In order to do so, it is crucial for the metadata and content described in Europeana to be semantically rich, multilingual and re-usable. A better integration with Wikidata is therefore a key priority.[1] Wikidata fulfils many of the criteria Europeana has set for its data-source selection and is now part of its own knowledge graph, the Europeana Entity Collection, for describing people, places and concepts entities. In addition, the Wikidata/Commons Structured Data project will provide Europeana with structured metadata for describing digital content. While Wikidata and Structured Data provide a way to leverage the re-use of cultural heritage metadata and content on the Web, it is crucial for the whole GLAM sector to engage with these two initiatives to make it a success. In this workshop we will invite participants to discuss what could be done: for the GLAM community to better leverage the power of Wikidata to share their local resources on the Web. for Wikidata to enrich its existing knowledge base with GLAM data. for third parties like Europeana to get access to rich and multilingual descriptions.","original_language":"eng","persons":["Valentine Charles","Antoine Isaac","Liam Wyatt"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10016"],"view_count":69,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-28T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2025-12-28T17:45:19.295+01:00","length":1768,"duration":1768,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10016-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10016-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/f0ba2e36-c397-5948-b78b-dcdb3fc67e8f-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/f0ba2e36-c397-5948-b78b-dcdb3fc67e8f-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10016-structured_data_how_can_glams_grab_the_low_hanging_fruit","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/f0ba2e36-c397-5948-b78b-dcdb3fc67e8f","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":4707,"event_guid":"52c2d2e9-5ae9-5ac4-b7d0-1fa2649a1d68","weight":5},{"event_id":4708,"event_guid":"d0801745-1584-5398-9698-5202712fc5f9","weight":5},{"event_id":4711,"event_guid":"4c554a17-525f-570f-ba79-d2fcdd4aee4c","weight":5},{"event_id":4712,"event_guid":"102ba8fd-4ff8-59bb-a38a-a804b1c95a2f","weight":5},{"event_id":4714,"event_guid":"72ccdc8d-96b6-5bd7-8a20-052e2603c5d9","weight":10},{"event_id":4718,"event_guid":"80cbb9a2-528a-53e1-bf07-5642a765e0a9","weight":5},{"event_id":4736,"event_guid":"d06d37b3-c8a9-5782-a468-0939b3b5c41f","weight":6},{"event_id":4739,"event_guid":"89c1609c-d5d1-5fd8-8d2f-26336098188c","weight":6}]},{"guid":"c36aa2f0-cf40-5d57-9d8a-67c4057bb17a","title":"Languages in Wikidata","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10043-languages_in_wikidata","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"Wikidata has the ability to serve the needs of many language communities and could change the way computers interact with language online completely - that all depends on the community though. There is a clear need for attracting new editors and growing the community, but at the same time, retaining existing editors is also crucial for the success of Wikidata. While Wikidata has currently thousands of active editors, only a few of them are power users who perform large amounts of edits, and/or stay long in the project. We conducted a longitudinal study to compare the editing behaviour that editors with different levels of engagement exhibit over time. Our analysis covers Wikidata edits over almost 4 years and monitors editing behaviour in a session-by-session- and monthly-basis. We observed multiple dimensions, such as the way the participation, the volume and the diversity of edits done by Wikidata editors change. Using the findings in our exploratory analysis, we define and implement prediction models that help us predict whether (i) an editor will contribute with a high volume of edits or not, and whether (ii) an editor will stay long in Wikidata or not. The goal of the talk is twofold: first, I would like to present and discuss the results of our data analysis (30 minutes). This work was a joint work with Alessandro Checco (University of Sheffield), and Gianluca Demartini (University of Queensland), in collaboration with Djellel E. Difallah (New York University), Michael Feldman (University of Zurich) and Lydia Pintscher (Wikimedia Deutschland). Second, I would like to start a discussion on how we, as a community, could intervene in order to try to convince standard users to become power users (15 minutes). Examples of topics that would be interesting to discuss in this direction are: Understanding power users What are the good and bad habits of power editors? And what are tips and tricks that they recommend? How and when do power users decide what to edit? Defining actions towards an increase in the number of power users What should be strengthen in terms of dissemination and training? What kind of assistive tools could we implement for standard users?","original_language":"eng","persons":["Cristina Sarasua"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10008"],"view_count":45,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-11-05T01:00:00.000+01:00","updated_at":"2024-05-07T01:00:03.788+02:00","length":3171,"duration":3171,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10008-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10008-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/64d7c608-ba6a-5496-acc5-a615d409b792-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/64d7c608-ba6a-5496-acc5-a615d409b792-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10008-understanding_differences_between_power_and_standard_users_in_editing_behaviour_over_time","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/64d7c608-ba6a-5496-acc5-a615d409b792","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":1833,"event_guid":"bJDjDUHLd0Y6wLncMd5Unw","weight":1},{"event_id":2218,"event_guid":"1hSKsR-r9B0BnpLfUvpDAg","weight":1},{"event_id":2705,"event_guid":"55fccc39-c1bb-4d05-aa95-7188ad229f56","weight":1},{"event_id":2761,"event_guid":"3d7c44a2-7e31-11e5-b91e-8554bed95b63","weight":1},{"event_id":2933,"event_guid":"c50c5193-7389-4858-9352-14ea6d74b77a","weight":1},{"event_id":3695,"event_guid":"c300b194-2a85-4705-92aa-b4e789882303","weight":1},{"event_id":3754,"event_guid":"0cf3ff5b-9d86-4831-8eac-588d92771f63","weight":1},{"event_id":3857,"event_guid":"880588ea-3e65-4eee-a4b9-e240c4c187e8","weight":1},{"event_id":3864,"event_guid":"63dd83b9-27e4-4122-8a45-48ca7c92e13e","weight":1},{"event_id":3896,"event_guid":"567b415b-22c0-4371-86e8-454ad43734f8","weight":1},{"event_id":4100,"event_guid":"dd70ef12-bd0c-58a9-abee-c59f993c86f3","weight":1},{"event_id":4247,"event_guid":"2dd16bb3-657b-41b6-bdec-987ada3f285c","weight":1},{"event_id":4261,"event_guid":"3852e448-f6cf-4bfe-8b14-12d590075bd6","weight":1},{"event_id":4596,"event_guid":"f0b8c645-0eb0-4390-ae22-b6e2e397038e","weight":1},{"event_id":4690,"event_guid":"9c7834b9-816d-4c56-b242-53d37af3741b","weight":2},{"event_id":4691,"event_guid":"fd6ae8ae-e424-458a-b5ae-691c86c3a551","weight":1},{"event_id":4711,"event_guid":"4c554a17-525f-570f-ba79-d2fcdd4aee4c","weight":2},{"event_id":4747,"event_guid":"7c4e4180-bdd1-11e7-beb3-d7168f22064c","weight":5},{"event_id":4749,"event_guid":"a4887518-855a-4d68-9414-c432412c4e21","weight":2},{"event_id":4750,"event_guid":"c4e93281-92a1-433a-b4ed-ba2fc0812ff1","weight":2},{"event_id":4752,"event_guid":"f5143dd4-c1d4-4611-96e3-b442a64b917c","weight":1},{"event_id":4754,"event_guid":"6882d1d0-ba41-4fc1-a579-1f665659e960","weight":4},{"event_id":4758,"event_guid":"70d63b5d-0e39-4271-b4e5-fefc783b2a2b","weight":2},{"event_id":4759,"event_guid":"119d0188-df86-11e7-a509-670931c02efc","weight":2}]},{"guid":"86d6fad0-df2c-5120-b3bd-f1160dcf17d8","title":"Using Shape Expressions for data quality and consistency in Wikidata","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10032-using_shape_expressions_for_data_quality_and_consistency_in_wikidata","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"As a truly open data infrastructure, community issues such as disagreement, bias, human error, vandalism, etc. manifest themselves on Wikidata. From a curator's perspective, it can be challenging at times to filter through the different Wikidata views while maintaining one's own definitions and standards. Whether stemming from benign differences in opinions/views, or more malignant forms of vandalism or the introduction of low quality evidence, public databases face extra challenges in providing data quality in the public domain. Here we propose the use of W3C Shape Expressions (ShEx: https://shexspec.github.io/primer/) as a toolkit to model, validate and filter the interactions between designated public resources and Wikidata. It is a language for expressing constraints on RDF graph and a schema language for graphs. Wikidata is fundamentally a graph, so ShEx can be used to validate Wikidata items, communicate expected graph patterns, and generate user interfaces and interface code. It will also allow us to efficiently: Exchange and understand each other’s models Express a shared model of our footprint in Wikidata Agilely develop and test that model against sample data and evolve Catch disagreement, inconsistencies or errors efficiently at input time or in batch inspections.","original_language":"eng","persons":["Andra Waagmeester","Katherine Thornton","Lucas Werkmeister","Gregory Stupp"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10032"],"view_count":101,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-28T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2024-06-10T04:15:01.987+02:00","length":2577,"duration":2577,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10032-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10032-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/86d6fad0-df2c-5120-b3bd-f1160dcf17d8-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/86d6fad0-df2c-5120-b3bd-f1160dcf17d8-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10032-using_shape_expressions_for_data_quality_and_consistency_in_wikidata","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/86d6fad0-df2c-5120-b3bd-f1160dcf17d8","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":4707,"event_guid":"52c2d2e9-5ae9-5ac4-b7d0-1fa2649a1d68","weight":3},{"event_id":4708,"event_guid":"d0801745-1584-5398-9698-5202712fc5f9","weight":2},{"event_id":4711,"event_guid":"4c554a17-525f-570f-ba79-d2fcdd4aee4c","weight":3},{"event_id":4712,"event_guid":"102ba8fd-4ff8-59bb-a38a-a804b1c95a2f","weight":2},{"event_id":4716,"event_guid":"870ebc84-4df0-57f0-beb5-3113dfc65179","weight":2},{"event_id":4718,"event_guid":"80cbb9a2-528a-53e1-bf07-5642a765e0a9","weight":4},{"event_id":4720,"event_guid":"20f6772c-3ab4-5b8d-a009-d8de62f02449","weight":2},{"event_id":4728,"event_guid":"d362eea5-b920-5117-aba9-6eb0f0297a83","weight":2},{"event_id":4730,"event_guid":"fa904c76-9fc0-5686-bb61-0e3583d8d6c5","weight":2},{"event_id":4732,"event_guid":"78d685ca-2657-5327-8ef3-932d4d21d167","weight":2},{"event_id":4733,"event_guid":"218bc2df-6fb4-51d8-9063-4cf123444953","weight":2},{"event_id":4738,"event_guid":"4a9420bd-0a58-5b10-b8c4-91a5b87f6685","weight":2}]},{"guid":"409fa7f8-28ff-5782-bca8-9bc1652eb68a","title":"Wikidata as the future of cultural heritage data − for Wiki Loves Monuments and beyond","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10022-wikidata_as_the_future_of_cultural_heritage_data_for_wiki_loves_monuments_and_beyond","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"More than 1.4M monument have been gathered from more than 70 countries across the world since the inception of Wiki Loves Monuments in 2010. Up until now, these monuments and the meta data associated with them were stored in the Monuments database. Built by harvesting lists from Wikipedia projects, this is to the best of our knowledge the largest collection of data on built heritage in the world.The database and the API on top of it allowed tool developers to build visualizations (maps), maintenance tools (categorisation bots, consistency checkers), and beyond. However, the database imposed some important limitations to the storage and accessibility of the monuments data. For example, multilingualism was not well supported by the database, tracking the origin of data was difficult, and data sanity was too complicated to be achieved. In this talk, we present an overview of the migration of monuments data from Monuments database to Wikidata: we will show an overview of the technical work that has been done to use Wikidata as the backend for surfacing monuments data, the opportunities and challenges we have faced in this transition both in the social and technological sense, and the state of the current transition. We also will present some of the technologies that have been powered, thanks to this transition, to help Wiki Loves Monuments achieve its mission more effectively.","original_language":"eng","persons":["Jean-Frédéric Berthelot"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10022"],"view_count":50,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-28T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2025-06-26T11:45:05.629+02:00","length":1870,"duration":1870,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10022-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10022-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/409fa7f8-28ff-5782-bca8-9bc1652eb68a-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/409fa7f8-28ff-5782-bca8-9bc1652eb68a-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10022-wikidata_as_the_future_of_cultural_heritage_data_for_wiki_loves_monuments_and_beyond","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/409fa7f8-28ff-5782-bca8-9bc1652eb68a","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":4707,"event_guid":"52c2d2e9-5ae9-5ac4-b7d0-1fa2649a1d68","weight":2},{"event_id":4716,"event_guid":"870ebc84-4df0-57f0-beb5-3113dfc65179","weight":4},{"event_id":4718,"event_guid":"80cbb9a2-528a-53e1-bf07-5642a765e0a9","weight":5},{"event_id":4721,"event_guid":"4e19087d-3aa5-5be9-8a36-17f4d28e3a11","weight":3},{"event_id":4723,"event_guid":"9832f3cc-95e9-5199-be5f-a0a9a85aa080","weight":3},{"event_id":4725,"event_guid":"22475c8a-6e38-5f3c-b70b-a8074522ac03","weight":2},{"event_id":4735,"event_guid":"dcf3b420-9d5a-5be8-920e-8ef55eb4329b","weight":2},{"event_id":4736,"event_guid":"d06d37b3-c8a9-5782-a468-0939b3b5c41f","weight":3}]},{"guid":"4a9420bd-0a58-5b10-b8c4-91a5b87f6685","title":"Wikidata for digital preservation: A Wikidata Portal","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10012-wikidata_for_digital_preservation_a_wikidata_portal","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"Wikidata, the knowledge base of structured data that anyone can edit, has roughly 16,000 active editors. The number of editors is growing steadily. How can we support hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of editors? One strategy is to create contribution pathways that reduce the barriers of entry for newcomers. We introduce Wikidata for Digital Preservation, a portal that allows users to curate structured data related to file formats, software, and configured software environments. The Wikidata for Digital Preservation Portal presents a subset of the 4,000 properties on Wikidata so that the user does not have to be familiar with the current inventory of properties. The interface guides users through finding items to edit, adding statements, adding qualifiers to statements and adding references. This portal will make it easier for people to contribute structured data related to this domain. Structured data about the technical metadata in the domain of computing is essential for digital preservation. This structured data can be used to power workflows in digital preservation systems. In traditional publication models the rare occasions in which research software is provided along with a publication, the links between those research outputs are not always easily maintained. Funders, publishers, scholars, librarians, and other information professionals need ways to describe software that is used in research just as they need to describe scientific publications. Connecting scientific articles and the software used in their creation is not currently well-supported in scholarly communication. This is changing as more funders and publishers are mandating that research data and research software be published alongside research papers. A recent announcement from the Wellcome Trust is a new policy on research data and research software. Several other similar initiatives are underway to promote awareness of the need for software citation. We will report on exploratory research into statements about software that can be mined out of publications indexed by PubMed. We will describe the workflows we created to add statements to the Wikidata items for scientific articles from our study to describe the software that was used in the study. We will share findings about how to reuse existing ontologies to further refine statements we can make about what aspect of the research process a particular piece of software was used. This research will then be used to enrich or inform existing recommendations about software citation, software curation, research data citation, and research data curation. This will help us create data models within Wikidata that will support our work to describe complex research objects relevant to scholarly communication, including software citation involving dereferencable Wikidata URIs. Practices of description, curation, and structuring are emerging in the Wikidata community that will support precise software description according to data models that are currently being developed. We are working toward increasing the breadth of citable software (describing versions, describing configured software environments, etc.) and toward the breadth of aspects of the research process (data collection, data analysis, document typesetting, figure creation, data set used, etc). Wikidata can have properties to describe as many parts, facets, processes, perspectives on the research process as we create for ourselves. We have the option to describe complex research outputs collectively in a open collaboration system so that anyone can freely reuse this content.","original_language":"eng","persons":["Katherine Thornton","Finn Årup Nielsen"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10013"],"view_count":58,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-29T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2025-03-15T19:15:03.614+01:00","length":687,"duration":687,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10013-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10013-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/8ceaafc5-8510-5f9d-aa7c-c1df95ca2865-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/8ceaafc5-8510-5f9d-aa7c-c1df95ca2865-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10013-describing_software_so_we_can_cite_software","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/8ceaafc5-8510-5f9d-aa7c-c1df95ca2865","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":4707,"event_guid":"52c2d2e9-5ae9-5ac4-b7d0-1fa2649a1d68","weight":3},{"event_id":4718,"event_guid":"80cbb9a2-528a-53e1-bf07-5642a765e0a9","weight":3},{"event_id":4720,"event_guid":"20f6772c-3ab4-5b8d-a009-d8de62f02449","weight":3},{"event_id":4726,"event_guid":"52f26d2e-89f2-5945-a7e2-c119128ce845","weight":3},{"event_id":4732,"event_guid":"78d685ca-2657-5327-8ef3-932d4d21d167","weight":3},{"event_id":4734,"event_guid":"b1acc9eb-d761-509d-a726-b2409ea01a8e","weight":7},{"event_id":4738,"event_guid":"4a9420bd-0a58-5b10-b8c4-91a5b87f6685","weight":4},{"event_id":4739,"event_guid":"89c1609c-d5d1-5fd8-8d2f-26336098188c","weight":3},{"event_id":4742,"event_guid":"6ce5ffc3-94c6-5fa8-b4c2-ea86fa0c9858","weight":3},{"event_id":4758,"event_guid":"70d63b5d-0e39-4271-b4e5-fefc783b2a2b","weight":3}]},{"guid":"22475c8a-6e38-5f3c-b70b-a8074522ac03","title":"WikifactMine","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10011-wikifactmine","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"The WikiFactMine project is a WMF Project Grant Funded Project by ContentMine that seeks to use text mining of the Open Access bioscience literature to enhance the Wikimedia projects. We'll be giving a brief introduction to the project including: the selection of papers we mine, how the mining is being done and the sort of things we're extracting. Its degree of completeness, in turn, is much less understood. Anecdotal evidence suggests that it covers many popular topics quite well, but there are few standard means that help in this assessment: At present, editors and consumers have to analyze largely on a case-by-case basis whether given information might be complete or not. This session concerns the automated assessment of the completeness of Wikidata, and consists of two parts: In the first 35 minutes I will survey techniques to assess the completeness of parts of Wikidata. I will talk about three aspects of completeness, values, properties and entities: For values, I will discuss no-value statements and predicates that talk about object counts, and the COOL-WD tool for asserting metadata. For properties, I will review mandatory properties (like P1963) and the completeness status indicator icon via Recoin and tabular views like discussed here and exemplified here. For entities, I will look at what is currently possible with the Class Browser, SQID, and what faceted browsing should hopefully make possible in the future. The second part of the session (15 minutes) shall be an open discussion, guided by the questions What kind of (anecdotal) knowledge about completeness of parts of Wikidata do participants have? What kind of structured knowledge about completeness would participants like to obtain? What tools could help towards this?","original_language":"eng","persons":["Ls1g"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10031"],"view_count":46,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-28T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2022-01-28T20:00:10.685+01:00","length":2936,"duration":2936,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10031-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10031-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/7b8fbfab-c3e6-594f-8dd5-26612ffa8052-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/7b8fbfab-c3e6-594f-8dd5-26612ffa8052-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10031-data_completeness_how_to_know_what_wikidata_knows","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/7b8fbfab-c3e6-594f-8dd5-26612ffa8052","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":4707,"event_guid":"52c2d2e9-5ae9-5ac4-b7d0-1fa2649a1d68","weight":6},{"event_id":4708,"event_guid":"d0801745-1584-5398-9698-5202712fc5f9","weight":5},{"event_id":4711,"event_guid":"4c554a17-525f-570f-ba79-d2fcdd4aee4c","weight":6},{"event_id":4712,"event_guid":"102ba8fd-4ff8-59bb-a38a-a804b1c95a2f","weight":3},{"event_id":4714,"event_guid":"72ccdc8d-96b6-5bd7-8a20-052e2603c5d9","weight":5},{"event_id":4720,"event_guid":"20f6772c-3ab4-5b8d-a009-d8de62f02449","weight":3}]},{"guid":"72ccdc8d-96b6-5bd7-8a20-052e2603c5d9","title":"Wikidata loves GLAMs","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10018-wikidata_loves_glams","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"This talk will highlight ways that GLAM's of all sizes can utilize Wikidata to enrich their data, Provide detailed data for open images, publish Open Data and explore their collections in new ways. In fact we use Wikidata as a thesaurus for entities in newspaper articles. This functionality can easily be extended to the library catalogue. In bibliographic records, resources get an identifier to distinguish between resources with the same name and for combining name variants. In most cases, this identifier is a URL, also giving access to context information. But how can we find out whether resources mentioned in different catalogues are the same? A lot of links between those identifiers are available in VIAF. So from the identifier in one catalogue we find the VIAF identifier and from the VIAF identifier we find the ISNI identifier and from the ISNI identifier we find the Wikidata identifier. But suppose we were to use the Wikidata identifier directly in our bibliographic records. Then we could provide more functionality without all this \"hassle\". And when other libraries do the same, it makes searching a specific resource in other catalogues a lot easier. A query like: “give me all books with author X, where X is the same as Y in Wikidata and were Y is the same as Z from the KB thesaurus” is more complicated than “give me all books with Wikidata identifier Y”. In this presentation I will show some functionality available in the KB research environment using Wikidata and I will discuss the use of Wikidata as thesaurus for individual libraries wanting more semantic functionality with less effort. Furthermore I will discuss the problems of conflicting viewpoints, responsibility for the contents and the mixed use of Wikidata and local and other thesauri. It offers humanity a way to cope with the data and information overload that characterize the digital age, and allows users to interact with data and information in a more meaningful way that was not technically possible before. As one of the largest semantic knowledge bases in existence, Wikidata helps to change the interactions between humans and knowledge, and facilitate new learning opportunities for users across all disciplines. However, celebrating only its 5th anniversary, Wikidata is still a very young project, and the global Wiki community, as well as the academic and research communities, are yet to explore its potential as a learning and teaching tool. What are some of the current uses of WD in the classroom? What are some of the advantages and challenges while trying to implement it into the curriculum? And what are some future ideas to go about this process? The purpose of this Round Table is to explore practical and fun ways of bringing Wikidata into the classroom, while having a global discussion about - Current uses of WD in the classroom The advantages of using WD not only for learning, but also as a way to develop critical thinking and 21st century skills The challenges the Wikidatans and Educators have met so far and how they have been handled Brainstorm about future possibilities of bringing the magic of Wikidata to new generations of learners The Round Table will host Wikidatans and Educators who are currently using Wikidata as a learning platform, and will encourage a live discussion with participants of this session.","original_language":"eng","persons":["Shani Evenstein"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10006"],"view_count":44,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-28T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2024-09-27T12:00:03.195+02:00","length":3342,"duration":3342,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10006-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10006-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/d3f98548-23ba-5729-91f7-1df97006d359-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/d3f98548-23ba-5729-91f7-1df97006d359-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10006-wikidata_and_education_using_wikidata_as_an_educational_platform","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/d3f98548-23ba-5729-91f7-1df97006d359","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":2729,"event_guid":"tQw71O0HV22Nb0wVftQOFA","weight":3},{"event_id":4707,"event_guid":"52c2d2e9-5ae9-5ac4-b7d0-1fa2649a1d68","weight":3},{"event_id":4708,"event_guid":"d0801745-1584-5398-9698-5202712fc5f9","weight":2},{"event_id":4709,"event_guid":"65a20903-0094-5312-91e6-ac83b0359eac","weight":2},{"event_id":4711,"event_guid":"4c554a17-525f-570f-ba79-d2fcdd4aee4c","weight":2},{"event_id":4716,"event_guid":"870ebc84-4df0-57f0-beb5-3113dfc65179","weight":3},{"event_id":4718,"event_guid":"80cbb9a2-528a-53e1-bf07-5642a765e0a9","weight":2},{"event_id":4719,"event_guid":"7b8fbfab-c3e6-594f-8dd5-26612ffa8052","weight":2},{"event_id":4721,"event_guid":"4e19087d-3aa5-5be9-8a36-17f4d28e3a11","weight":2},{"event_id":4734,"event_guid":"b1acc9eb-d761-509d-a726-b2409ea01a8e","weight":2},{"event_id":4743,"event_guid":"c36aa2f0-cf40-5d57-9d8a-67c4057bb17a","weight":2}]},{"guid":"218bc2df-6fb4-51d8-9063-4cf123444953","title":"Wikidata for biomedical knowledge integration and curation","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10014-wikidata_for_biomedical_knowledge_integration_and_curation","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"The sum total of biomedical knowledge is accumulating at an explosive rate. There are now over 1.2 million new articles published every year, averaging to one new article every 26 seconds. Unfortunately, however, the entirety of that knowledge is not easily accessible. In most cases, biomedical knowledge is locked away in free-text research articles, which are very difficult to use for querying and computation. In some cases, that knowledge has been deposited in structured databases, but even then the fragmented landscape of such databases is a barrier to knowledge integration. Here, we describe the use of Wikidata as an open, community-maintained biomedical knowledge base. We have seeded Wikidata with data on key biomedical entities, including genes, proteins, diseases, drugs, genetic variants, and microbes. To ensure source databases are properly credited, we have implemented a standardized model for referencing and attribution. These data, combined with other data sets imported by the broader Wikidata community, enable powerful integrative queries that span multiple domain areas via the Wikidata SPARQL endpoint. The emphasis of this abstract is on Wikidata as resource for biomedical Open Data that can serve as a foundation for other bioinformatics applications and analyses. In addition, the code developed to execute this project is also available as Open Source software. This suite of code includes modules for populating Wikidata, for automatically synchronizing with source databases, and for creating domain-specific applications to engage specific user communities.","original_language":"eng","persons":["Gregory Stupp"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10014"],"view_count":47,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-28T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2024-07-22T01:15:02.156+02:00","length":1828,"duration":1828,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10014-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10014-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/218bc2df-6fb4-51d8-9063-4cf123444953-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/218bc2df-6fb4-51d8-9063-4cf123444953-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10014-wikidata_for_biomedical_knowledge_integration_and_curation","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/218bc2df-6fb4-51d8-9063-4cf123444953","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":4708,"event_guid":"d0801745-1584-5398-9698-5202712fc5f9","weight":2},{"event_id":4711,"event_guid":"4c554a17-525f-570f-ba79-d2fcdd4aee4c","weight":3},{"event_id":4712,"event_guid":"102ba8fd-4ff8-59bb-a38a-a804b1c95a2f","weight":2},{"event_id":4714,"event_guid":"72ccdc8d-96b6-5bd7-8a20-052e2603c5d9","weight":2},{"event_id":4716,"event_guid":"870ebc84-4df0-57f0-beb5-3113dfc65179","weight":4},{"event_id":4718,"event_guid":"80cbb9a2-528a-53e1-bf07-5642a765e0a9","weight":2},{"event_id":4724,"event_guid":"86d6fad0-df2c-5120-b3bd-f1160dcf17d8","weight":2},{"event_id":4728,"event_guid":"d362eea5-b920-5117-aba9-6eb0f0297a83","weight":2},{"event_id":4730,"event_guid":"fa904c76-9fc0-5686-bb61-0e3583d8d6c5","weight":3},{"event_id":4735,"event_guid":"dcf3b420-9d5a-5be8-920e-8ef55eb4329b","weight":2},{"event_id":4736,"event_guid":"d06d37b3-c8a9-5782-a468-0939b3b5c41f","weight":2},{"event_id":4738,"event_guid":"4a9420bd-0a58-5b10-b8c4-91a5b87f6685","weight":2},{"event_id":4740,"event_guid":"5a102360-9ce0-5667-a216-9740f6ba69ec","weight":3}]},{"guid":"20f6772c-3ab4-5b8d-a009-d8de62f02449","title":"Wikidata quality: a data consumers' perspective","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10030-wikidata_quality_a_data_consumers_perspective","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"Data quality is an important topic for Wikidata, as the number of initiatives and projects around this topic testifies. To name just a few, the Item quality campaign relied on the work of the community to evaluate Items using a single-grading label scheme. The CoolWD project focuses on a particular dimension of quality, providing users with information about the completeness of the results of a query and allowing them to add this information to Wikidata. Furthermore, I have previously sought in a Request for Comment (Data quality framework for Wikidata) to gather opinions from the Wikidata community in order to create an appropriate data quality framework for this platform, which would be rooted in prior scientific literature and distinguish several quality dimensions.  All these projects focus either on measuring data quality under various viewpoints or on generating a conceptualisation of data quality in Wikidata. They are essential to our understanding of Wikidata, as they explore different aspects of its quality. Nevertheless, data quality is most commonly defined as \"fitness for purpose\". As such, it is seen from the point of view of data consumers. What can be an acceptable degree of completeness or accuracy for e.g. providing tourist information, it is not enough when it comes to using the data to provide medical advice. Therefore, for a comprehensive understanding of what data quality means in Wikidata we need to have a clear overview of how this is used as a resource. Specifically, the aims of this session will be to: identify typologies of data consumers for Wikidata; gain an overview about the needs of each data consumer type and of the quality issues they experience.  This session is open to everyone interested in Wikidata. However, it would be ideal to have a mixed audience, with member of the Wikidata community and professionals using this project as a data resource, in order to facilitate the exchange of different points of view. The presence of both practitioners using Wikidata as individuals and members of organisations would be highly beneficial. The session will be structured in three parts: Short introduction by the author of the submission about data quality-related projects concerning Wikidata (10-15 min.); Open discussion, where the attendees will be invited to report their experiences and express their ideas about the topic (35 min.); Summing up of the discussion and final remarks (10-15 min.).","original_language":"eng","persons":["Alessandro Piscopo"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10030"],"view_count":39,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-28T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2023-12-28T21:00:07.161+01:00","length":3313,"duration":3313,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10030-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10030-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/20f6772c-3ab4-5b8d-a009-d8de62f02449-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/20f6772c-3ab4-5b8d-a009-d8de62f02449-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10030-wikidata_quality_a_data_consumers_perspective","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/20f6772c-3ab4-5b8d-a009-d8de62f02449","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":4711,"event_guid":"4c554a17-525f-570f-ba79-d2fcdd4aee4c","weight":4},{"event_id":4719,"event_guid":"7b8fbfab-c3e6-594f-8dd5-26612ffa8052","weight":4},{"event_id":4725,"event_guid":"22475c8a-6e38-5f3c-b70b-a8074522ac03","weight":3},{"event_id":4729,"event_guid":"15af2b32-0b5e-5ec2-89a2-32ed2c0219ed","weight":3},{"event_id":4737,"event_guid":"8ceaafc5-8510-5f9d-aa7c-c1df95ca2865","weight":3}]},{"guid":"fa904c76-9fc0-5686-bb61-0e3583d8d6c5","title":"Wikidata and Open Government (Meta)Data - A missing link?","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10034-wikidata_and_open_government_meta_data_a_missing_link","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"Open Government Data - the open publication of administrative data by governments - is no longer in its infancy. While many governments and subnational regions around the world are beginning to publish their data in open formats, many aspects of the process can be improved. Specific data is usually hard to find and it remains a challenge to link and connect the information already available. As a result, the extent to which the available data is reused remains limited. Hence, governments have turned to the potential of linked open data. Currently, the EU prescribes DCAT-AP as the European Standard to describing open government data and national governments - such as Germany - are in the process of implementing the new standard. Such a shift raises new challenges and opportunities: how can the quality of linked metadata be improved? Specifically, is it possible and feasible to link existing open data provided by governments with other data and information infrastructures - such as Wikidata - to maximize the availability, usefulness, and reuse of open government data? What are the prerequisites? As representatives of the Open Data Team of the federal state of North-Rhine Westphalia, these are among our key questions as we prepare for the implementation of Open Linked (Meta)Data in Germany. Thus, in this workshop we would like to: give a brief overview of the current state of open data in Germany and North Rhine-Westphalia present our current plans for implementing the Linked Open Metadata standard  DCAT-AP.DE in North Rhine-Westphalia request comments and feedback for improvement receive participants’ input on further possibilities for linking Wikidata and Open Government Data in the future","original_language":"eng","persons":["Björn Fleischer","Thore Fechner","Marc Kleemann"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10034"],"view_count":58,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-28T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2025-07-21T13:00:05.492+02:00","length":1404,"duration":1404,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10034-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10034-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/fa904c76-9fc0-5686-bb61-0e3583d8d6c5-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/fa904c76-9fc0-5686-bb61-0e3583d8d6c5-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10034-wikidata_and_open_government_meta_data_a_missing_link","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/fa904c76-9fc0-5686-bb61-0e3583d8d6c5","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":4707,"event_guid":"52c2d2e9-5ae9-5ac4-b7d0-1fa2649a1d68","weight":6},{"event_id":4708,"event_guid":"d0801745-1584-5398-9698-5202712fc5f9","weight":2},{"event_id":4711,"event_guid":"4c554a17-525f-570f-ba79-d2fcdd4aee4c","weight":3},{"event_id":4712,"event_guid":"102ba8fd-4ff8-59bb-a38a-a804b1c95a2f","weight":2},{"event_id":4714,"event_guid":"72ccdc8d-96b6-5bd7-8a20-052e2603c5d9","weight":3},{"event_id":4716,"event_guid":"870ebc84-4df0-57f0-beb5-3113dfc65179","weight":2},{"event_id":4718,"event_guid":"80cbb9a2-528a-53e1-bf07-5642a765e0a9","weight":2},{"event_id":4719,"event_guid":"7b8fbfab-c3e6-594f-8dd5-26612ffa8052","weight":2},{"event_id":4724,"event_guid":"86d6fad0-df2c-5120-b3bd-f1160dcf17d8","weight":2},{"event_id":4726,"event_guid":"52f26d2e-89f2-5945-a7e2-c119128ce845","weight":2},{"event_id":4733,"event_guid":"218bc2df-6fb4-51d8-9063-4cf123444953","weight":3},{"event_id":4734,"event_guid":"b1acc9eb-d761-509d-a726-b2409ea01a8e","weight":2},{"event_id":4740,"event_guid":"5a102360-9ce0-5667-a216-9740f6ba69ec","weight":3},{"event_id":4741,"event_guid":"708aee11-da2a-54bb-886e-9d9ac1a59dd8","weight":2},{"event_id":4742,"event_guid":"6ce5ffc3-94c6-5fa8-b4c2-ea86fa0c9858","weight":2}]},{"guid":"5a102360-9ce0-5667-a216-9740f6ba69ec","title":"Data import: An overview of the current system","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10025-data_import_an_overview_of_the_current_system","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"This session is a workshop intended to bring together Wikidata wizards and enthusiasts who can help resolve some of the major pain points in the data import process. For example: It’s very difficult to keep Wikidata ‘in sync’ with an external data source (especially when they have no unique ID system!). There’s no way to easily report metrics related to a particular data import. It’s hard to find which data has been changed since a previous import. Lots of data processing is needed by people with advanced spreadsheet and/or coding skills. It will be framed around a presentation section, where we will share our experience of importing data from UNESCO, and show the data import documentation that has been created as a result. Tool development will obviously play a huge part in solving the problems with data import. Central to our discussion will be where existing tools fit into the process (e.g. QuickStatements, Mix’n’Match, the Wikidata Query Service), and how things may need to change when GLAMPipe is ready to become the hub for data imports. The hope is that we can come away from this session with a plan that will help shape future decisions about the data import process, documentation and related tools.","original_language":"eng","persons":["John Cummings","Navino Evans"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10025"],"view_count":45,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-29T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2025-11-04T12:15:03.894+01:00","length":2033,"duration":2033,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10025-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10025-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/5a102360-9ce0-5667-a216-9740f6ba69ec-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/5a102360-9ce0-5667-a216-9740f6ba69ec-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10025-data_import_an_overview_of_the_current_system","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/5a102360-9ce0-5667-a216-9740f6ba69ec","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":4707,"event_guid":"52c2d2e9-5ae9-5ac4-b7d0-1fa2649a1d68","weight":3},{"event_id":4710,"event_guid":"f0ba2e36-c397-5948-b78b-dcdb3fc67e8f","weight":2},{"event_id":4714,"event_guid":"72ccdc8d-96b6-5bd7-8a20-052e2603c5d9","weight":2},{"event_id":4716,"event_guid":"870ebc84-4df0-57f0-beb5-3113dfc65179","weight":2},{"event_id":4718,"event_guid":"80cbb9a2-528a-53e1-bf07-5642a765e0a9","weight":3},{"event_id":4726,"event_guid":"52f26d2e-89f2-5945-a7e2-c119128ce845","weight":3},{"event_id":4730,"event_guid":"fa904c76-9fc0-5686-bb61-0e3583d8d6c5","weight":3},{"event_id":4731,"event_guid":"6fec2fcb-e37c-58aa-be2d-ff71b3e9513a","weight":3},{"event_id":4733,"event_guid":"218bc2df-6fb4-51d8-9063-4cf123444953","weight":3},{"event_id":4736,"event_guid":"d06d37b3-c8a9-5782-a468-0939b3b5c41f","weight":2},{"event_id":4737,"event_guid":"8ceaafc5-8510-5f9d-aa7c-c1df95ca2865","weight":2},{"event_id":4738,"event_guid":"4a9420bd-0a58-5b10-b8c4-91a5b87f6685","weight":2},{"event_id":4742,"event_guid":"6ce5ffc3-94c6-5fa8-b4c2-ea86fa0c9858","weight":2}]},{"guid":"6fec2fcb-e37c-58aa-be2d-ff71b3e9513a","title":"Data donation discussion","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10026-data_donation_discussion","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"Data donation discussion","original_language":"eng","persons":["various"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10026"],"view_count":13,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-28T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2019-11-11T01:15:05.952+01:00","length":331,"duration":331,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10026-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10026-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/6fec2fcb-e37c-58aa-be2d-ff71b3e9513a-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/6fec2fcb-e37c-58aa-be2d-ff71b3e9513a-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10026-data_donation_discussion","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/6fec2fcb-e37c-58aa-be2d-ff71b3e9513a","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":4711,"event_guid":"4c554a17-525f-570f-ba79-d2fcdd4aee4c","weight":2},{"event_id":4736,"event_guid":"d06d37b3-c8a9-5782-a468-0939b3b5c41f","weight":2},{"event_id":4740,"event_guid":"5a102360-9ce0-5667-a216-9740f6ba69ec","weight":3}]},{"guid":"4e19087d-3aa5-5be9-8a36-17f4d28e3a11","title":"WikiCite: Wikidata as a structured repository of bibliographic data","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10009-wikicite_wikidata_as_a_structured_repository_of_bibliographic_data","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"WikiCite is an ongoing effort to build an extensive bibliographic database in Wikidata to serve all Wikimedia projects. While the idea has been around for over a decade, the technology needed to sustain this effort is maturing, and the immediate goal of the initiative to produce a well-curated, high-quality structured dataset of all sources cited across Wikimedia projects in Wikidata is taking shape. The current WikiCite project originated at Wikimania London and was supported by a first dedicated event in Berlin in the spring of 2016. In May 2017, a second, larger event took place in Vienna, co-located with the Wikimedia Hackathon, to further advance this work. The aim of the second event was to showcase progress made so far, identify technical gaps/needs, strengthen ties with key partners (such as Zotero, the Internet Archive, OCLC, Crossref, ORCID) as well as funders (the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Simons Foundation). Significant progress has been made to date: the modeling of a schema to represent scholarly article metadata is nearly completed: WikiCite participants and other Wikidata users have catalogued over 2 million scientific articles on Wikidata and described over 3.3 million citations between scientific articles. These articles have begun to be used as references for Wikidata statements and could be used to improve the handling of references on other Wikimedia projects. tools and platforms to allow a rapid integration of references (such as SourceMD or PMIDTool) and to visualize the relations between scholarly knowledge and the rest of Wikidata (such as Scholia) have seen significant growth and adoption. multiple corpora have also been created as part of WikiCite, showcasing the value of linking up knowledge to its sources in a machine-readable way. Beyond efforts around the Zika Corpus, collaborations with scientific open data communities, such as the Gene Wiki project, Wikipathways, CIViC, Reactome are continuing.","original_language":"eng","persons":["Dario Taraborelli","Lydia Pintscher","Daniel Mietchen"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10009"],"view_count":202,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-28T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-28T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2025-11-14T13:45:05.226+01:00","length":3153,"duration":3153,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10009-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10009-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/4e19087d-3aa5-5be9-8a36-17f4d28e3a11-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/4e19087d-3aa5-5be9-8a36-17f4d28e3a11-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10009-wikicite_wikidata_as_a_structured_repository_of_bibliographic_data","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/4e19087d-3aa5-5be9-8a36-17f4d28e3a11","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":4707,"event_guid":"52c2d2e9-5ae9-5ac4-b7d0-1fa2649a1d68","weight":6},{"event_id":4708,"event_guid":"d0801745-1584-5398-9698-5202712fc5f9","weight":9},{"event_id":4711,"event_guid":"4c554a17-525f-570f-ba79-d2fcdd4aee4c","weight":7},{"event_id":4712,"event_guid":"102ba8fd-4ff8-59bb-a38a-a804b1c95a2f","weight":6},{"event_id":4716,"event_guid":"870ebc84-4df0-57f0-beb5-3113dfc65179","weight":17},{"event_id":5657,"event_guid":"be3340d0-8c90-51ea-a0a7-7b5650d762b4","weight":13}]},{"guid":"d06d37b3-c8a9-5782-a468-0939b3b5c41f","title":"Structured Commons and Wikidata","subtitle":null,"slug":"wikidatacon2017-10038-structured_commons_and_wikidata","link":"https://c3voc.de","description":"The Wikimedia Foundation and WMDE are currently working to integrate structured data support with the the software that enables Wikidata, Wikibase, into Wikimedia Commons. Structured data will turn Wikimedia Commons into a more engage-able platform from editors and readers, improving discovery, organization and the pathway for small contributions in all of the languages supported by Wikimedia projects. Additionally, providing a better Metadata infrastructure allows for better uploading of content from partner communities who want to share their media and to dynamically take advantage of the Wikimedia community's environment. Like Wikidata, structured data on multimedia files will allow for more dynamic results and improvements to how Commons content can be used both within and beyond the Wikimedia movement. Sandra Fauconnier, community liaison, will explain the updated plans for the project, with a focus on technological developments, and what we are learning from community engagement and research. Together, the attendees of this session will identify the challenges that we expect to be upcoming, and discuss ways in which the Wikidata community can be involved in the upcoming years.","original_language":"eng","persons":["Sandra Fauconnier"],"tags":["wikidatacon2017","10038"],"view_count":90,"promoted":false,"date":"2017-10-29T00:00:00.000+02:00","release_date":"2017-10-29T02:00:00.000+02:00","updated_at":"2024-04-10T08:30:06.494+02:00","length":1562,"duration":1562,"thumb_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10038-hd.jpg","poster_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/10038-hd_preview.jpg","timeline_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/d06d37b3-c8a9-5782-a468-0939b3b5c41f-timeline.jpg","thumbnails_url":"https://static.media.ccc.de/media/events/wikidatacon/2017/d06d37b3-c8a9-5782-a468-0939b3b5c41f-thumbnails.vtt","frontend_link":"https://media.ccc.de/v/wikidatacon2017-10038-structured_commons_and_wikidata","url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/events/d06d37b3-c8a9-5782-a468-0939b3b5c41f","conference_title":"WikidataCon 2017","conference_url":"https://api.media.ccc.de/public/conferences/wikidatacon2017","related":[{"event_id":4707,"event_guid":"52c2d2e9-5ae9-5ac4-b7d0-1fa2649a1d68","weight":6},{"event_id":4711,"event_guid":"4c554a17-525f-570f-ba79-d2fcdd4aee4c","weight":8},{"event_id":4717,"event_guid":"540ea73e-6056-598f-95d6-0954b03e688c","weight":4},{"event_id":4734,"event_guid":"b1acc9eb-d761-509d-a726-b2409ea01a8e","weight":8},{"event_id":4735,"event_guid":"dcf3b420-9d5a-5be8-920e-8ef55eb4329b","weight":8}]}]}
